Video Pencil Launches Football (Soccer) Toolkit for Live Match Analysis on iPad

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Video Pencil launches the Football (Soccer) Toolkit: match analysis you draw live on an iPad, with highlights that follow the players
22 October 2026. Michael Forrest (Good To Hear Ltd) has released the Football (Soccer) Toolkit for Video Pencil, his iPad app for drawing live on video. Coaches, scouts and analysts can load a match clip, tap a player to highlight them, and press play: the highlight, the player’s name or number, and any lines joining players follow them around the pitch. There’s no timeline, no keyframes and no rendering.
Video Pencil is already being used at the top of the game: Harry Kane used it on camera in a video on Bayern Munich's YouTube channel (https://youtu.be/EJNOxIGdieg).
Most match analysis is still made in video editors. The analyst picks a graphic, sets its colours and segments, drags it onto a timeline, decides how long it stays up, and tries to line it up with a voiceover. The Football Toolkit replaces that with a pencil: pause the clip, tap, draw, explain, and press play.
The toolkit includes:
  • Player highlights that track each player and shrink in perspective as they move away from the camera
  • Connections: drag across two or more players to join them with a line that stays with them as they move
  • Names and numbers, remembered with each clip
  • Three smooth arrows: a run, a pass, and a run with the ball
  • Space markers that sit in perspective on the pitch
  • Move a player: drag them to where they should have been, with their original position faded out

The toolkit grew out of a PowerPoint template made by Ged Searson, a former Premier League scout and Managing Director of AFCAS, which teaches coaches and scouts to analyse the game. Scouts dragged his icons onto stills from matches. “Stage two is to get the icons to follow the players as they move,” he told Video Pencil’s developer, Michael Forrest. “Then you have totally cracked it.” In the Football Toolkit, they do.
Analysis can be recorded in the app and sent to a player or the whole squad, shown on a team-room TV through Apple TV or HDMI with only the footage and drawings on screen, or brought into Zoom and live streams on a Mac with CueCam. Because it’s hands-on, players can take the iPad and draw on the footage themselves.
“I’m not a football coach, so this was built by listening to the people who are,” said Michael Forrest. “Some of them are paid analysts with editing tools that cost thousands a year. Others are coaches who’ve been asked to help out and are never going to spend their weekend editing clips. But I could see them picking up an iPad.”
New clips are analysed once by an AI model to find the players; the analysis resumes if it’s interrupted and is kept with the clip. Player tracking works on recorded footage, for review sessions rather than live matches.
